Heartgard Plus Blue is a vet-recommended, monthly chewable treatment that prevents heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis and treats and controls 3 species of hookworms and 2 species of roundworms in small dogs weighing up to 25 lbs. It comes in a delicious, real-beef chew that makes dosing easy and enjoyable for dogs. It prevents canine heartworm disease effectively by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae after infection and preventing the development of the adult stage.
Heartgard Plus Chews contain ivermectin and pyrantel as the key ingredients. They work together to target heartworms and intestinal worms in dogs. Ivermectin prevents the development of heartworm larvae, whereas pyrantel, the anthelmintic, works against roundworms and hookworms. The chew can be given as a treat or with a small amount of food, ensuring the dog chews it thoroughly.
Heartgard Plus has demonstrated a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs, including pregnant or breeding dogs, stud dogs, and puppies. Heartgard Plus for Dogs up to 25 lbs is recommended for dogs and puppies 6 weeks of age and older.
Note: All dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with Heartgard Plus, as it is not effective against adult D. immitis. If the dog tests positive for heartworms, it must be treated to remove adult heartworms and microfilariae before initiating a program with Heartgard Plus.

Heartworm disease can affect any dog, indoors or out, at any time of year. Even though there are fewer mosquitoes in the winter, an animal might still get heartworms if you fail to administer preventatives during this time. That's why veterinarians frequently advise that pets should be treated for heartworms all year long.
