As dog parents, we’d always want our beloved canine companions to remain with us for the longest time. Though the average lifespan of a dog is 10 years, certain dogs hold records of outliving the average lifespan by many years. Some dogs have even lived for more than three decades, which is unbelievably long for any dog.

According to studies, typically dogs of smaller breeds tend to live longer, but records have shown that some of the oldest dogs in the world were medium-sized. A male purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, Bobi was certified by Guinness World Records for being the oldest dog. Born in May 1992, the Portuguese pooch spent its whole life roaming freely, without a leash or a chain, living in a peaceful environment and consuming human food soaked in water to remove their seasoning. It spent its whole life in a small Portuguese village, about 93 kilometers north of Lisbon. Its life was ultimately cut short when he passed away on 21^st October 2023.

2. Bluey – 29 years 160 days

A female Australian Cattle Dog, Bluey held the title of the oldest dog in the world for as long as 83 years until Bobi outlived it. It spent its life on a farm in Rochester, Victoria, and spent around three decades rounding sheep and cattle. Its active lifestyle could be one of the reasons for its long and healthy life. Unfortunately, it had to be euthanized in 1939 at the age of 29 years and 5 months.

Known to have lived for more than 26 years, Pusuke was a Shiba Inu mix breed from Tochigi, Japan. It had once sustained serious injuries after being hit by a car in 2008. The pooch had to undergo surgery to make it through the nightmare. Pusuke thereafter led an active and healthy life and remained in good health until it died in 2011.

The Border Collie ended living for over 25 years which is way longer than its breed’s average lifespan of 14 to 17 years. He passed away in 2003.
