Pet medications - Ask a vet a question about your dog or cat

Question from Peggy Johnson

I recently purchased Hartz First Defense for flea control since I have 5 cats and was looking for something a little more affordable that Advantage. Is this product really harmful to my cats? I have been reading some on line information and it’s really scaring me to go back to Advantage. Could you give me an educated opinion on this product.

Our Vet Says:

Hartz First Defence has the same active ingredient as Frontline Top Spot. My personal opinion is to use Advantage or Advantage II. If you have a problem only with fleas it is better to use Advantage but if you have a problem with fleas and ticks you need to use product that has the active ingredient Fipronil.
