Question from Andrea St Cyr

My precious Precious, who found ME at age 2 months, has extremely sensitive skin. Found this out when I tried to apply over-the-counter flea treatment. I felt so bad as he was trying to scratch his skin. I have since then applied only FrontLine brand. However, it does not seem to be very effective as of late, and I would like to try another kind, such as Advantage. How can I know if this will also cause a bad reaction? Or will it be at all effective? Thank you for any help you can give me on this. My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat so has lots of itchy enemies on him.

Our Vet Says:

Unfortunately you can’t know if your cat is allergic to any other product without applying the product. Advantage is a good product with good results but it can cause a few side effects.
In very rare occasions skin reactions such as hair loss, redness, itching and skin lesions may occur. Agitation has also been reported. Excessive salivation and nervous signs such as in-coordination, disorientation, agitation, tremors and depression have been reported exceptionally in cats and dogs.
In dogs no adverse clinical signs were produced by either individual doses of up to 200 mg/kg body weight (five to eight times the therapeutic dose), daily treatments at 100 mg/kg body weight for five consecutive days or weekly treatments at five times the maximum dose rate for eight consecutive weeks.
In cats, no adverse clinical signs were produced using doses of five times the therapeutic level for eight consecutive weeks.

My advice is to not change the product if you have good result with Frontline because it may cause side effects.

I have alwaysused topical flea products non Cloey ever since she nwas old enough. This last summer I used Advantage and within about three weeks I had to put it on Cloey again. I found two types of fleas on her some were real teeny black ones and some were nbigger brown ones. The flea stuff worked for only 3 weeks on these fleas. when I used to buy it it used to say on the box works for up to three months and it DID. Have the companies watered the product down so that I have to buy it more...?
