Pet medications - Ask a vet a question about your dog or cat

Question from Coleen Love

Jasper

American Short Hair, age 2-1/2 years

Jasper gets bumps on his neck when fleas are bothering him. A friend even noticed that he seemed to drink water funny - sips then raises his head. He was given Comfortis two days ago and we bombed the house with Hot Shot canisters 5 days ago... yet tonight I saw a flea jumping off him and his neck has not cleared up, but rather gotten worse. I am ready to start using liquid Program on our four animals. Do I need to worry about drug interactions since he has just had Comfortis a few days ago?

Our Vet Says:

There is no record of any adverse reaction between Program Plus and Comfortis, but every dog is different. My advice is not to give another medicine with Comfortis. Don’t give any medication for 2 weeks. Spinosad (the active ingredient for Comfortis) has been shown to be a substrate for P-glycoprotein (PgP). Spinosad could therefore interact with other PgP-substrates (for example, digoxin and doxorubicin) and possibly enhance adverse reactions from such molecules or compromise efficacy interaction.

My advice is to treat your pet and your house and yard at the same time. Repeat the treatment of your house after 2 weeks.

I have 12 yr. old Male Black Lab that weighs 133 LB & was just diagnosed with heart worms. Are there any other options for him other than the Immiticide injections? Im worried about this option because of the risk with his age. A couple veterinarians have told me to treat with heartgard for 12 months & may get negative test results in that time if I was needing a more affordable & safer option? Only other problem, Jordan has arthritis in his hip & currently takes 2 Rovera 100 mg. tablets dai...?
