Tips to protect your pet during freezing temperatures

No Outdoor Activities

In this chilly weather, keep your pets indoors. Do not keep them out in cold for long periods, as this will adversely affect their health. Remember, thermometer reading and actual temperatures vary many times due to wind chills making it much colder. Limit outings, and be aware of frostbite on paws, tail and ears. After running with your dog on snow, check for their cold paws. If they get too cold, avoid taking your dog out.

Cats – predominantly outdoor animals are worst hit in cold weather due to attack from wild animals, road traffic, and starving or freezing to death. So, make sure to keep your cat indoors.

Dogs and Cats Accessories

Coats and boots are not necessarily for Richie rich pets. Cover your dog or cat with warm clothing. When taking out for a walk, cover their paws with dog boots.

Antifreeze – Not for Pets

During cold weather, driveways and roadways often have antifreeze. Even though, it smells and tastes sweet to your pet, it is poisonous. If your dog has ingested this substance, immediately consult a vet. Moreover, other anti-breezing agent like rock salt irritates your dog’s pads. Always ensure to rinse your pet’s paws and dry them, after being outdoors.

Proper Shelter

In case your dog is living outdoors, make sure to provide a well-insulated kennel for him. Line the floor with a thick sheet of straw, not hay. Never cover with blankets or towels, as they become damp making space much colder. Keep the opening southwards, with well-built and flexible covering to prevent strong icy winds from entering.

Keep Pets Warm Indoors

When indoors, keep your dogs and cats warm, dry and away from direct drafts. Heaters or other secondary heating appliances may burn your pet. Keep them safe from portable heaters and ensure to screen your fireplaces. More importantly never leave your pet alone with unattended space heater or fire.
