Pet medications - Ask a vet a question about your dog or cat

Question from Vickie M. Rash

she gets fleas even thought i use comfortis and frontline plus i still get dozens of fleas off her daily i have treated my yard for pests and my home i have two other dogs and a cat and they do not have this problem thank goodness she is not allergic do you have any idea what if anything i can do my vet has no answer

Our Vet Says:

If one of your pets has fleas you can be pretty sure all of them have fleas especially if they live in the same house. If the number of fleas is lower on the rest of your pets it might be because when you applied the product on her it is possible that the application was not done correctly, i.e. in the case of Frontline Plus directly on the skin, so the efficiency of the products was reduced in her case. If her protection against fleas is lower than the rest of the pets from your house she will “pick” all the fleas from all the animals. This is the only reason I can imagine why you spot fleas on her and less on the rest of your pets.
Because you have four pets in your household it is very important that the flea prevention is always up to date and that you use very good products. Also the way you apply the products is very important. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions for administration before using any veterinary medicines on your pets. If you do not follow all the rules of flea prevention you end up having an incubator for fleas with so many animals around.
Basic rules:
All your pets should be treated at the same time
·        Use top products
·     If the degree of flea infestation is too high you need to treat your house at the time as your pets                                   Prevent fleas all year around

Question of the Month

Congratulations to the winner of this month's Question of the Month, cheryl d. who wins $100 for the following question:

My Maddy is 6 years old and a HUGE girl -170 lbs. and the sweetest girl in my world! Trouble is... She is miserable with the itching. I been to the vet and tried changing her food to no beef, chicken, or pork. I also had her on allergy pills that cost $140 a month. I simply can’t afford that plus the expensive dog food, plus continuous yard treatments, etc. can you recommend a flea pill that is affordable? She is also on prion for incontinence. Will it affect that medication too? Thank ...?
