How to keep your pets healthy and happy over the holidays

Coping with stress

The holidays can be a stressful time for pets as well as people. Extra guests in the house means more activity and unsettles your pet's routines, usually they cope well but sometimes they may need some extra support.

Christmeal meals are for humans and not our pets

In one of our recent blog posts we pointed out the dangers of feeding your pets Thanksgiving meals and the same applies to Christmas meals. Please bear in mind that even just a small treat from the table could prove to be very damaging to your pet's health. For more information, you can read the post on Thanksgiving meals being dangerous to pets.

The dangers of Antifreeze

As discussed on our blog, watch out for Antifreeze this Winter whilst you’re out on walks with your dog as the solution can be lethal to animals if consumed. Spills of this liquid are common in winter months on driveways as car owners perform engine maintenance.

Acute cases of antifreeze poisoning often show as if the animal is intoxicated with alcohol. This is an emergency situation, and life threatening within hours. See your veterinarian immediately; the outlook depends on how quickly treatment can be administered.

Antifreeze is brightly colored, syrup-like liquid that has a sweet, appealing taste for your pooch. If you think your dog is likely to consume it, keep him on a lead at all times and one eye fixed firmly on him, it might just save his life.

Christmas trees

Most real Christmas trees are safe to have around pets but just be aware that your pets may pick up loose pine needles in their paws. Check paws regularly and cleaning loose needles is recommended to avoid discomfort for your pet.

It is advised to never leave your pets alone with the Christmas tree and decorations as they may consume items hazardous to their health. A common visit to the Veterinary emergency room over Christmas is due to dogs consuming Christmas tree decorations. If you're going out, it may be wise to shut them out of the room the tree is located in.

Joint problems - How Exercise Can Help Your Dog

Statistics show that 1 in 5 dogs in America are suffering from joint problems. One of the most effective ways of having an immediate improvement to your dog’s health and pain management is weight loss, yet it can be one of the most difficult things to accomplish.

It is often a vicious cycle; your dog is overweight which affects the joints, so he’ll want to move less or you might walk him less for fear of more pain, which then creates more weight gain and more joint pain.

Weight loss for your dog helps by reducing the stress placed on joints and the muscles that support those joints. It will also reduce the inflammation of arthritis. Studies have claimed that fat could be considered a pro-inflammatory. By reducing the weight of your dog, the stress on the joints and muscles will be lessened and will give them the chance to heal and strengthen.

Although weight loss won’t cure dog arthritis, it will make the condition easier for your dog to cope with. For less pain and more mobility for your dog, you need to consider diet and exercise... You can read more of this Dog arthritis and weight loss article over on our blog.
