Being a family holiday, most of the pet owners may decide on taking their furry friends along.

However, travelling with pets may need in-depth planning to avoid unfortunate situations. There are several things to keep in mind prior and post departure for safe and secure journey. Most of the cases of lost pets are recorded while the family is travelling. Thus to preserve your chances of getting your pet back in case you lose him, it is necessary to microchip your pet. If your furry partner is already micro chipped, check if all the details are up-to-date. Ensure that the pet is wearing an ID tag with a contact number that works back at your home.

Verify the vaccination dates with your vet and check with him if any of the vaccine shots or worming treatment is due. The new environment may harbor fleas and it is always better to assume that it does. Treat your kitty or pooch with effective flea treatment to avoid its infestation. In case of older pets it is better to get a full vet check up before leaving. Take your pet’s own bedding to safeguard him from infections.

If you are going to travel in a car, keep your furry friends confined in a crate. If you have an extra large pooch, make sure he is harnessed properly. Also, do not forget to pack the pet’s regular food as it is not advisable to change his diet suddenly. It may happen that your dog’s regular food is not available there. Hence to shun the possibilities of tummy upsets it may be better to carry his regular food.

Take consistent toilet and water breaks. If traveling in a car try to provide a litter tray to the cat unless they are trained to a lead or harness. After reaching the destination keep your kitty indoors if she is not trained to be on lead. Keep your pooch on leash at least for a few hours. Doing otherwise may increase the probability of losing a pet.

If you are going to a coastal destination for your holiday, confirm the status of ticks with that place’s veterinarian on phone.  Existence of paralysis ticks on that destination may put your pet’s health and life in danger.
