How To Check If Your Kitty Is Getting Enough Water?

Felines prefer a lavish life with soft bed, enticing treats, different toys, separate litter trays, water and food bowls, and entertainment units such as cat tree, scratch posts, etc. While they tend to do what they please, it is us who need to look after cat’s health requirements.

One of the most important things to keep in check is their water consumption. A cat normally requires 2-4 ounces of fresh water daily in addition to their food intake. However felines may have a habit of toppling their water bowls or some has a habit of drinking through a tap which may not let you determine as to how much water your kitty consumes. So, how would you check if your queen is drinking enough water? Here are some tips!

Does your feline need more water?

  • We all know how flexible kitties can be and that how much they love climbing and other physical activities. If you find her being lethargic constantly then lack of water can be the reason. You need to provide appropriate amount of water to gain back your feline’s flexibility.
  • Check your cat’s skin elasticity by gently pulling the skin around his neck. If the skin spring back when you release it then you cat has a perfect skin and his water intake may be sufficient. However, if it does not spring back then your kitty might not be drinking enough water. Also check for flaky dry skin.
  • An average cat urinates 3-4 times a day. If your kitty does not urinate 3-4 times a day then keep a close check on his water intake.

These are some of the tricks to check if your cat is drinking enough water or not. There may be cases when the cat refuses to drink water even though it is available. In such cases try to change the water bowl. Cats are cleanliness freaks and may not drink water if it smells or has a weird taste. Choose glass or stainless steel bowls over plastic ones and make sure you keep them clean. If your kitty prefers tap over a bowl then make sure you make a dripping tap available to your feline.

Any remarkable decrease or increase in your cat’s water intake may be a sign of sickness. Consult your vet immediately in such circumstances. Keep checking your felines water consumptions through the above tricks and make sure they stay hydrated.
