With the festive holiday approaching, we are all on the heels to complete those million things on to do list for Christmas. But, are you aware that there are a few minute things that are dangerous to pets during the festival. Christmas tree, chocolates, Christmas turkey, tinsels and other decorative items bundle up to help you celebrate Christmas with pomp and merriment. However, these inevitable parts of Christmas celebration are found to be hazardous for your pet.

While celebrating Christmas don’t forget to take care of the following things.

  • It’s tempting to feed your pooch with the remains of turkey. Take care not to give the remains of Christmas turkey, just remember bones can kill your pooch.
  • Fatty meals are often cooked during Christmas; the remains always end up in your pet’s stomach. Excessively fatty food can directly cause pancreatitis, which is the inflammation of the pancreas. So, avoid giving such table scraps to your companion.
  • Floral arrangements and plants are common in Christmas. If you have lilies, then they are highly toxic to pets especially for cats and the pollen can easily get into their coats. Moreover, when they groom they easily ingest these toxins, which is quite harmful.
  • Poinsettias are also common in decorations at home during Christmas. But, beware they are all toxic to your pets. So, take care that you don’t leave your pet unattended when you are around these decorations or place them out of reach of your furry pal.
  • You would love to have a decorative ribbon on your pup collar, but beware that this could become a choking hazard.
  • Remember to discard bows and ribbons wrapped around holiday gifts, as they too are dangerous in case your four-legged companion try to chew or swallow them. Ingested ribbon can lead to life-threatening condition, which may even require emergency surgery.
  • Christmas is never complete without chocolates. Hanging those treats on the Christmas tree for your pet is dangerous. Chocolates are poisonous to both dogs and cats due the substance theobromine present in it. Therefore, you need to take special care that they do not reach those tasty treats.
  • Compared to plastic trees, Christmas trees are more dangerous. The pine needles on the tree are more dangerous. If they are ingested, they can puncture the internal organs. Moreover, pine tree causes skin irritation in dogs and cats with skin allergies.
  • The decorative items on the tree such as tinsels and string are most attractive to cats. They cause serious problems if ingested, and are stuck into the digestive system. This can lead to operation if required to remove it.
  • Christmas is a busy time with visitors coming and going. Some pets may be happy while the others may feel stressed out. Understand the feelings of your pet and provide a quiet space if the need arises, especially when your relatives or friends have young children.
